Data Retreat is a two-day workshop designed to give government workers the time, space, and skills needed to unleash their creativity in addressing important challenges facing their communities. We believe that people learn best by doing, so Data Retreat focuses on improving data literacy by empowering government workers to solve real problems with real data.
The workshop is not a boring lecture
It’s a fun, hands-on session that’s geared at the 99% of government workers that appreciate the value of data, but do not consider themselves data science experts.
Participants work in cross-departmental teams
Teams use low-tech tools (post-it notes), human-centered design, and technology familiar to participants (Socrata, R, Excel, etc) to create insights on problems that matter.
Is this right for you?
If you want to create organizational momentum from across departments on the value of data to address important challenges, Data Retreat is for you.
The Socrata Data Academy was a unique opportunity to collaborate with local government staff from different backgrounds and experience. Learning and working together on hands-on data analysis projects helped us to connect with new ways of approaching problems we currently face in our county.
"Little Rock needed a way to do some internal staff capacity building around data usage and departmental silo busting. Socrata’s Data Academy was the perfect fit to help us accomplish those goals. We were able to customize the content to fit the needs of our staff and over the course of the first Academy we had a group whose presentation is now a pilot project working directly with a neighborhood to increase the quality of life for our residents."
